Psoriasiform-lichenoid-like dermatosis in three dogs treated with microemulsified cyclosporine A

Cyclosporine has been reported to be effective for the treatment of various cutaneous autoimmune disorders in dogs. Adverse reactions have generally been limited to gastrointestinal tract disturbances and cutaneous eruptions. The article describes antimicrobial-responsive cutaneous reactions in 3 dogs being treated with microemulsified cyclosporine A because of various dermatologic conditions. Cutaneous reactions in these dogs were similar to psoriasiform-lichenoid dermatitis and may represent an atypical staphylococcal infection.     

Avian paramyxovirus serotype 1 isolates from the spinal cord of parrots display a very low virulence

The spinal cord of 32 psittacines suffering from proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) was investigated. In six cases, a virus was isolated which upon electron microscopic examination revealed morphological details typical of members of the Paramyxoviridae. All isolates were subsequently characterized as avian paramyxovirus serotype 1 (APMV-1) by type-specific polyclonal antisera. According to their reactivity with APMV-1 specific monoclonal antibodies, the six isolates shared epitopes within the haemagglutinin-neuraminidase spike protein, distinct from pigeon-type paramyxoviruses and the LaSota vaccine strain. This grouping was further corroborated by properties of the haemagglutinin: all isolates showed a very thermosensitive haemagglutination activity and were rapid eluters. Virulence of the APMV-1 isolates in 1-day-old specific pathogen free (spf) chicken was very low, with intracerebral pathogenicity indices between 0 and 0.1. In embryonated spf chicken eggs, psittacine isolates replicated to high titres (10(8.6)-10(10.7) EID50/ml). However, they exhibited a reduced lethality over an observation time of 7 days (10(6.1)-10(8.3) ELD50/ml). In a haemagglutination inhibition test with parrot sera from birds with no history of APMV-1 vaccination, sera reacted preferentially with two isolates compared with APMV-1 vaccine strains LaSota and B1. The other four isolates exhibited a differentiated reaction pattern with the parrot sera, indicating an antigenic inhomogeneity. This is the first report of isolating very low virulent APMV-1 from neuronal tissue of parrots and implications for a possible role in slow progressing disease will be discussed.     

Risk factors for stillbirths in two swine farms in the south of Brazil

We evaluated stillbirth risk factors in two commercial swine farms of the Rio Grande do Sul State (south of Brazil). The study was conducted during 1 month in Farm A and during 2 months in Farm B, both during 1999. Data for all farrowings that occurred during the study period were recorded (101 for Farm A and 373 for Farm B), without interference in the farm management. In Farm A, 39% of all litters born during the period of interest had stillborn piglets and the stillborn risk for piglets was 12%. In Farm B, 25% of all litters had stillborn piglets whereas the stillborn risk was 2%. Variables considered as potential risk factors for stillbirths were: parity (1, 2–3, 4+); breed (purebred or crossbred); sow body-condition (normal or fat); use of oxytocin during parturition (yes or no); obstetric intervention through vaginal palpation (yes or no); farrowing duration (<4 or ≥4 h); mummified fetuses (yes or no); total litter size (<12 or ≥12 piglets); and litter birth weight (<11 or ≥11 kg). All stillborn piglets had their classification validated by necropsy. In multivariable logistic-regressions, the cases were the litters having at least one stillborn piglet. In Farm A, litters having at least 12 pigs and in which oxytocin was used during the parturition had 20.8-times-higher odds of stillborn occurrence. In Farm B, litters from sows having parity ≥4 had 2.2-times-higher odds of stillborn occurrence than litters from parity 2 to 3 females, litters having ≥12 pigs had 2.0-times-higher odds of a stillborn piglet than smaller litters and farrowings in which vaginal palpation was performed had 8.0-times-higher odds. Farrowing room management to minimize stillborn risk should target higher-parity females, large litters and optimization of practices of obstetric interventions.     

Prevalence of Cryptosporidium in sheep and goats bred on five farms in west-central region of Poland

Faecal specimens were taken from 205 sheep and goats housed in five different localities in the west-central part of Poland. All faecal specimens were examined for Cryptosporidium by using microscopy screening of smears stained by modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique and commercial enzyme immunoassay. PCR technique using genus specific primers was additionally applied in the surveys of 10 faecal specimens collected from lambs. C. parvum infection was identified in 16 of 159 sheep (10.1%). Lambs were more often infected than adult sheep, and the intensity of infection was higher in lambs than in sheep, as a rule. Both lambs and sheep examined in the study were asymptomatically infected with Cryptosporidium. Both microscopy and enzyme immunoassay methods gave one false negative result. The examination of 10 faecal samples revealed 100% agreement among the results obtained by microscopic, immunologic and molecular methods. None of the goats raised on three farms were infected with Cryptosporidium.

Einfluss von Erntezeitpunkt und Lagerverfahren auf die Druckstellenempfindlichkeit von Äpfeln

The influence of harvest date and storage method on bruises sensitivity of apples was investigated. The cultivars ‘Braeburn’, ‘Jonagold’ and ‘Golden Delicious’ were harvested at three times in an interval of 10 days. Fruits have been stored at 2°C in normal atmosphere (cold storage) or in film bags (CA-/ULO-storage; CA?=?Controlled Atmosphere, ULO?=?Ultra Low Oxygen) for three months. Monthly fruits were bruised by a penetrometer applying a range of pressures. One day later the appearance of bruises were evaluated. Increasing pressures resulted in bruises of increasing severity. Early harvest led to less severe bruises. No differences were observed in storage conditions, but duration of storage increased bruise sensitivity of ‘Braeburn’. In comparison of the three cultivars ‘Braeburn’ was less sensitive than ‘Jonagold’ and ‘Golden Delicious’.     

Progressive polysystemic immune-mediated disease in a dog

A dog with polyarthritis, angular joint deformities, and a high serum antinucleolar antibody titer was treated over a period of 20 months. During the clinical course, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, Coombs' positive hemolytic anemia, and a pemphigus-type skin disorder developed, all of which responded to immunosuppressive therapy. It is not known whether the polysystemic disease in this dog represents a pleomorphic manifestation of canine systemic lupus erythematosus or multiple autoimmune disorders occurring in the same animal.
